A remodel is the perfect time to make your home more comfortable and cheaper to run. When walls, floors, or ceilings are already open, adding insulation or sealing air leaks costs far less than doing it later. An energy-efficient home remodel can lower your utility bills, reduce drafts, and make every room more comfortable through hot Maryland summers and cold winters.

Why Combine Energy Upgrades With a Remodel?

Many energy upgrades are hidden inside walls, attics, and floors. Once a room is finished, getting to those spaces means tearing things apart again. So if you’re already remodeling a kitchen, bathroom, or basement, it’s the right moment to fix the parts you can’t see.

1. Seal Air Leaks

Small gaps around windows, doors, outlets, pipes, and attic hatches add up. Together, they can let in as much air as an open window. During a remodel, we seal gaps around new framing, wiring, and plumbing before the drywall goes up. As a result, your home stays warmer in winter and cooler in summer.

2. Add Insulation Where It’s Missing

Many older homes in Montgomery County have little or no insulation in exterior walls. Attics often need more too. When we open exterior walls during a remodel, we can add insulation before closing them up. In a basement finish, insulating the foundation walls and rim joists makes the space far more comfortable and helps control moisture. Learn more about our basement finishing services.

3. Upgrade Windows and Doors

Old single-pane or poorly sealed windows are a big source of heat loss. Replacement windows with ENERGY STAR ratings, low-E glass, and tight seals cut drafts and outside noise. Likewise, a well-insulated, weather-stripped exterior door keeps conditioned air inside. See our window replacement and door installation options.

4. Choose Efficient Lighting and Fixtures

LED lighting uses far less electricity than older bulbs and lasts for years. In kitchens and bathrooms, WaterSense-labeled faucets, shower heads, and toilets use less water without losing performance. Moreover, ENERGY STAR appliances can lower both energy and water use. 5. Improve Ventilation the Right Way

A tighter home needs good ventilation. Bathroom exhaust fans should vent outside, not into the attic. In the kitchen, a range hood that vents outdoors removes moisture, smoke, and cooking odors. In addition, good ventilation protects your new finishes from mold and moisture damage.

6. Plan for Heating and Cooling Changes

If you’re adding space, like a finished basement or an addition, your heating and cooling system needs to handle it. A remodel is also a good time to have an HVAC pro look at duct leaks, add a smart thermostat, or consider a heat pump. We coordinate with licensed HVAC partners when a project needs it.

Rebates and Incentives in Maryland

Incentives can help offset the cost of energy upgrades. Pepco and BGE customers can check their utility’s EmPOWER Maryland programs for rebates on insulation, air sealing, heat pumps, and home energy audits. The Maryland Energy Administration also lists current programs. Keep in mind that the federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (25C) ended for upgrades placed in service after December 31, 2025, so check current programs before you plan around a tax credit. Small Changes, Big Comfort

You don’t need to do everything at once. Even one or two upgrades, like sealing air leaks and replacing a few drafty windows, can make a noticeable difference. Then, as you remodel other rooms, you can keep improving your home’s efficiency step by step.
