At Real Time Home Improvement, we’re more than just a contractor or design team—we’re a small but mighty family‑run crew: Hugo, Gabriela, and our four‑legged “supervisor,” Mongo. (He doesn’t handle tools, but he’s a pro at boosting morale.)
We started with nothing but heart, hustle, and a dream that began in a basement—and we’re so proud to now serve the community we call home.
From Law enforcement to Renovations: Hugo’s Story
Hugo grew up right here in Rockville, MD, the son of hardworking Portuguese immigrants. From an early age, he learned that nothing great happens without effort—and that a good espresso makes the workday better.
He began his career as a correctional officer, hoping to become a police officer in Montgomery County. But after years of stress and asking himself, “Why am I doing this?” he made a brave change. He traded his badge for a tool belt, swapped night shifts for renovation plans, and hasn’t looked back since.
These days, you’ll find him on‑site leading our team with a calm mind, strong mind, and probably a breakfast bagel in the companies truck.
Gabriela’s Journey: Big Dreams and a Bigger Heart
Gabriela was also raised in Rockville, surrounded by love and the invaluable wisdom of her grandmother. One lesson that resonated deeply was her grandmother’s saying, “One bad apple spoils the rest,” a gentle reminder to carefully choose the people we keep around us. Her grandmother’s guidance has profoundly shaped who Gabriela is today, steering her toward integrity and kindness. It’s this same ethos that she brings to every client relationship—treating each project with the same care, respect, and dedication that she received growing up.
A dedicated student, Gabriela tackled the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program at Rockville High, excelling in courses like IB Psychology, IB English, and Personal & Professional Skills, all while earning her ADA Certificate in accessibility awareness. (In other words—she’s smart‑smart!)
She originally planned to become an EMS responder with the Rockville Fire Department, but somewhere between late‑night researching and trying to redesign the basement where she once lived, she discovered her true passion: interior design. Creativity won out—and she’s never been happier.
And Then There’s Mongo 🐾
Every good story needs a sidekick, and ours is Mongo—the loyal pup who’s been with us since day one. Back when our dreams were sketched on scrap paper and our “office” was Hugo’s mom’s basement, Mongo was there, wagging his tail through the late nights. To this day, he’s our little heartbeat… and happily accepts payment in belly rubs and cheese.
From a Basement to a Business We Love
We started Real Time Home Improvement in a basement with no fancy office, no startup funds—just a toolbox, a dream, and a lot of “we’ll figure it out.” (And yes, plenty of YouTube tutorials.)
We poured our energy, sweat, and even a few tears into this company because we didn’t want to build someone else’s dream—we wanted to build our own. Those early days meant 14‑hour shifts, late takeout dinners, and asking ourselves, “Are we really going to make it?”
But we did. And now, with a growing company and an amazing client family, we get to do what we love every day: help people create homes that feel beautiful, welcoming, and full of heart.
