In April 2025 we completed a staircase remodel in Ellicott City, MD. The open foyer staircase runs from a curved bottom step up to a landing, then turns to the second floor. In these photos, protective plastic is still on the handrail and nearby walls. They show dark, high-gloss treads and landing, white risers, white turned balusters and dark newel posts.

Project at a Glance

Location: Ellicott City, MD (Howard County)
Service: Staircase remodel
When: April 2025
Contractor: Real Time Home Improvement (MHIC #162705)

What We Did

Finished the stair treads and the landing in a dark, high-gloss color.
Carried the same dark finish down to the curved bottom step.
Created a two-tone look with dark treads, white risers and white turned balusters.
Covered the handrail, nearby walls and doorways with plastic and tape for protection.

Materials and Finishes

Dark, high-gloss finish on the treads and landing, with wood grain showing
White risers
White turned balusters
Dark newel posts and handrail

The Result

The finished staircase has a strong two-tone look. Every tread, the landing and the curved bottom step carry a dark, high-gloss finish, and the wood grain still shows on the landing. White risers and white turned balusters stand out against the dark wood. The dark newel posts at the landing and along the upper balcony repeat the color of the treads.

Hugo and Gaby from Real Time Home Improvement did a great job on our kitchen remodel in Bethesda, Maryland. They gave us a free estimate and a free design, and they helped us raise our cabinets all the way to the ceiling, which made more room in the kitchen. They were on site for most of the major stages and made sure everything ran smoothly. We were happy every step of the way.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Hugo and his team did a great job! They were on time, professional, and got everything taken care of. They leveled the subfloor and installed the LVP after I had a huge flooring issue in my bathroom. They also reattached my vanity, toilet, and tub, and reran all the plumbing because it had been leaking and was not installed correctly previously.

They did a wonderful job, and I would definitely recommend Hugo and his team for any future renovations. He’s a five-star guy!

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Hugo and his team were great to work with. I noticed my bathtub sinking and they were able to get me an estimate quickly with a more than reasonable price. Subfloor repair was thorough and they were able to identify a broken pipe causing the damage. They also repaired a significant portion of plumbing to prevent this type of damage from happening again. Would highly recommend this team, and if I have any other home projects I will certainly be giving them a call.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Exactly what I needed and wanted: calm, polite, professional, competitively priced, and very good at what they do. They redid my laundry area, including plumbing, waterproofing, tiling, and drywalling.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Hugo and his team led a full basement renovation and concrete driveway installation at our home. They finished both jobs concurrently and were on time and on budget in both regards. It was a pleasure working with the team and I would not hesitate to use Real Time again for large or small projects.
